Southwest of Perpignan (66 Pyrenees-Orientales, Languedoc-Roussillon) Englishman Jonathan Hesford and his kiwi wife have established a very successful wine domaine which also offers a Catalan farmhouse for rental:
Domaine Treloar is a small, high-quality wine producing estate in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of France.
It is owned and operated by Englishman Jonathan Hesford and his Kiwi wife, Rachel Treloar. Rachel’s Maori and Cornish ancestry is reflected in the logo. Jonathan is a qualified Viticulturist and Oenologist. He graduated top of his class at Lincoln University, New Zealand’s premiere wine academy. He was then employed for 2 years as the assistant winemaker at Neudorf Vineyards, one of the most highly regarded wineries in New Zealand.
Here in the Roussillon they bring together a passion for good wine, New World techniques and the wonderful local terroir. The aim is to make the best wines possible from every vintage.
The Cellarmaster’s House is available for both short or long-term stays – a 200 year-old Catalan stone village house on three floors. – it has 3 bedrooms, sleeping up to 6, a private walled garden, views of Canigou and handy access to the best wine in the region. Your stay will include a free mixed carton of wine and a discount on wine purchases.
The wines here are red, white and rosé and include dessert Muscat whites. The reds come in a variety of styles made from different combinations of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre grapes and are distinctively rich, some named after classic Bruce Springsteen tracks!
The domain is about 15km south west of Perpignan By train to Perpignan
