Moulin Du Landion – Champagne Hotel, Cote des Bars

Moulin de Landion
Moulin de Landion

South of the main Champagne producing area lies the area of Côte des Bars – still officially Champagne (producing up to 25% of the white Champagne harvest) and more attractive and less busy – around the Aube and Seine Rivers east of Troyes. The vineyards of the  Côte des Bars are planted almost exclusively with Pinot Noir grapes and tend to be somewhat lighter and fresher than those from further north. Dolancourt is located in the regional park Parc Naturel Régional de la Forêt d’Orient

The Moulin de Landion at Dolancourt (10 Aube, Grand Est) is a stylish Hotel and Restaurant which proved to be an ideal base for exploring the vineyards and Champagne houses of this less-known region, which we visited some years ago. The 16th Century water mill (moulin = watermill) remains a central feature with 16 en-suite bedrooms and an elegant restaurant and wine list. An excellent selection of Champagnes to taste in the bar or on the riverside terrace. Local food is an important feature of the restaurant. Originally part of  Relais de Silence group , so the surroundings are peaceful. The heated, covered, outdoor swimming pool is available during the high season and there is also a Spa with sauna!

The hotel is just 10km/ 7 miles from Bar-sur-Aube

The Côte des Bar, the southernmost of the Champagne sub-regions, is located 100 km south of Epernay and, as such, is closer to Burgundy than to the heart of the Champagne region. There are 2 recognised growing areas: Bar sur Aubois (around Bar-sur-Aube) – prized for its Pinot Noir and Barséquanais (around Bar-sur-Seine). One popular producer is Champagne Devaux

The Cotes des Bar is an upcoming Champagne area with a culture of artisanal,  experimental, terroir-driven Champagne , not dominated by the international Grandes Marques (brands) in the way of the Champagne vineyards in the Marne.
