Chateau de Bonhoste – Coup 2 Foudres – St Emilion B&B –

A rather novel form of accommodation is offered in the grounds of Chateau de Bonhoste in St Emilion (33 Gironde, Nouvelle Aquitaine) – a wine cask (empty!) at Coup 2 Foudres.

Firstly this is not a 225 litre barrel(barrique) seen in many wine cellars for ageing and maturing  wines, but a “foudre” – a large wooden cask more often used for storing wines, before the arrival of stainless steel.  As the photo shows these are well-proportioned and quite unique “pods” which are appropriately sited in the midst of the vineyards just 2km away from the heart of St Emilion village at Saint-Sulpice-de-Faleyrens (33, Gironde, Nouvelle Aquitaine). And being of purpose-built construction the walls are not reeking of wine fumes! The rooms are originally decorated in earthy tones and are set in these independent wood barrels. They come with a welcome glass bottle of wine, a kitchenette, walk-in shower and views of the vineyards.

Saint Emilion is probably the most attractive wine village in the Bordeaux wine region, The town is known for  its beautiful buildings and scenery with steep, narrow, cobbled streets, overlooked by a Romanesque church and the 13th-century Tour du Roy tower – with heaps of history, tradition and wine! – and blessed with plenty of hotels and restaurants

St Emilion

St Emilion is one of Bordeaux’s largest producing appellations in the Libourne district on the right bank of the Dordogne river.  Saint-Emilion wines are predominantly made from Merlot and Cabernet Franc grapes -and are considered the most robust of the Bordeaux. They are generous, very coloured, and reach their maturity quicker than other red Bordeaux wines.
