Sauternes is a very special dessert wine made from Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc grapes which have been affected by “noble rot” which happens in this area with autumn mists and a low-lying position between 2 rivers and the Atlantic coast. The ultimate expression of this wine is nearby Chateau d’Yquem, although there are other chateaux producing good, but more modestly priced wines.

Sauternes is particularly famous for its sweet dessert wines such as Yquem, Raymond-Lafon and Rieussec. They are considered to be among the best dessert wines in the world

Sauternes utilises the  noble rot (also called botrytis, a fungus covering the grape), Because soils are so diverse, and each chateau has its own way of making the golden wine, Sauternes is very distinctive from producer to producer.

Sauternes can often be delicious, golden, unctuous and delicate. A roasted note occurs when Sauternes is a little bit older.

Chateau Trillon is about 50km South West of Bordeaux.
