12 km/8 miles southeast of Bergerac (24 Dordogne, Nouvelle Aquitaine) is La Chartreuse du Bignac -a 4-star hotel and gourmet restaurant, which stands on a hill surrounded by a rolling landscape of plum trees and vines. It can be found in the heart of Bergerac vineyard, a region known for full-bodied reds and fruity whites. Head to the hotel’s on-site wine bar to sample some of the area’s finest vintages. A small library, stone fireplace and 12th-century vaulted cellars add to the countryside elegance. With a 360° view over the vineyards and woods, this 17th-century building, restored in keeping with tradition, is surrounded by 12 hectares of grounds with 3 century-old box trees, streams, ponds, pigeon house, orchards and an herb garden.
