Les Lodges du Pic at Domaine Haut Lirou offers 3 Languedoc self-catering gîtes in the middle of one of the most exciting wine appellations of the south – the Pic Saint Loup AOC at Saint-Jean-de-Cuculles near Montpellier (34 Hérault, Occitanie).
This family-owned Domaine (Jean-Pierre Rambier) also owns other domaines in the nearby appellations of Costières de Nîmes et Côtes de Thongue.
The area takes its name from the “Pic” – a dramatic jagged outcrop which dominates the area the foothills of which produce some powerful red wines.
Domaine Haut Lirou offers tours of the vineyard and cellars to visitors – a charge may be payable.
This area of the Languedoc produces distinctive red wines which are based on Syrah, Grenache , and/or Mourvèdre grapes. The Pic and the he proximity to the Cévennes mountains bring a continental influence to the climate here, despite being only 30km from the Mediterranean, This results in cooler nights and greater temperature variations between day and night. This combined with the local limestone soils allow grapes and wines to retain higher levels of acidity and fruit freshness than warmer areas in the plains of Languedoc. Another rcommended domaine is Domaine de l’Hortus at Valflaunès, (about 10km away) which produces some of the very best wines of Pic Saint Loup, but also has a fascinating timber winery open to visitors.
