Chateau Pape Clement

Chateau Pape Clement

Château Pape Clément is one of the oldest Grands Crus of Bordeaux. The vineyard dates back to 1252 – and an early proprietor became Pope in 1305 under the name of Clement V. This is where the Château inherited its name from and its wine became an icon.

The Chateau itself dates back to the 16th century and is luxuriously decorated with 19th Century furniture yet with modern amenities. The Chateau is one of a select group of vineyards owned and run by Bernard Magrez including Chateau Fombrauge in Saint Emilion.

At Chateau Pape Clement Bed and Breakfast is offered in one of the Prestige rooms or one of the Suites and includes access to a fine terrace and garden, wine tastings etc. The chateau has some impressive wine cellars for storing and maturing the wine in oak casks.

Thought by some to  produce one of the finest clarets, Pessac-Léognan(Graves) is home to the famous Chateau Haut-Brion. This is a classic Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes.

Ch Pape-Clement barreks ageing

Ch Pape-Clement barrel-ageing

“A wine of good density ruby red, with brown, mahogany, biscuit hints. It has maintained its luster and clarity. The rim is fairly thick. The tears are fine, clear, abundant and regular. Smell: At once expressive, forthright and complex. There are notes of all families of fragrance: fruit, flowers, and spices. Taste: The attack is forthright, round and suave, soothing even. The intense aromas initially recall the complexity of the nose. There is leather and lightly charred wood, and roasted notes. The beauty of the vintage is revealed by its elegance rather than its full-flavor. The wine has an attractive aromatic range with a finish of remarkable elegance.”

The wine is made from 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 47% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot, 1% Cabernet Franc

Here wines can cost over £100 a bottle, yet you can stay in the Chateau’s Bed & Breakfast
