Sauternes is a very special dessert wine made from Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc grapes which have been affected by “noble rot” which happens in this area with autumn mists and a low-lying position between 2 rivers and the Atlantic coast. The ultimate expression of this wine is nearby Chateau d’Yquem, although there are other chateaux producing good, but more modestly priced wines.
Sauternes is particularly famous for its sweet dessert wines such as Yquem, Raymond-Lafon and Rieussec. They are considered to be among the best dessert wines in the world
