In the northern Rhône valley Syrah produces elegant and rich red wines in the classic vineyards of Côte Rotie, Hermitage etc, whilst nearby the vineyards of Condrieu produce very aromatic dry whites from the Viognier grape from the steep-sided slopes of the river. Côte-Rôtie is one of the most famous of the northern Rhône appellations, with some single vineyard cuvées now selling for the same prices as First Growth Bordeaux. The appellation covers 500 hectares, with nearly 60 official vineyards. The wines are made from the Syrah grape, however up to 20 percent of Viognier can be used, adding finesse, elegance and floral characteristics to the wine. There is a wine fair in Ampuis in January!
