For the winemaker the provision  of holiday accommodation (originally in Gites in vacant properties) is part of a move to grow wine tourism (oenetourisme) and is a way to diversify their business and provide something of a buffer when the grape harvest is poor due to climate or disease. Today many winemakers see accommodation as a key part of their business and many work hard to provide quality accommodation and amenities together with a warm welcome.

For the visitor this is an ideal opportunity to meet the winemaker, visit the wine cellar, taste and buy the wine at farmgate prices and learn more about particular wine, where the grapes are grown and the “terroir” – that elusive concept of place, climate, people and tradition.
